ATL M HAMPTON -L (11-5, 4.04 ERA) vs COL C H TSAO -R (2-1, 5.86
ERA)>WIN
The Braves and the Rockies play the second game of their weekend
series in Colorado. In Friday's game between the two teams, Chipper
Jones blasted a two-run homer and finished with three hits and five
RBI to lead Atlanta over Colorado 9-3 as -135 favorites. Rafael
Furcal also hit a two-run homer en route to a three-hit night for
the NL-East leading Braves, who snapped a three-game skid. Greg
Maddux (12-10) avoided losing his third straight start by collecting
the victory. The four-time Cy Young Award winner allowed three runs,
two of which were earned, on three hits and two walks in six innings
of work. Charles Johnson smacked a two-run homer for the Rockies,
who came off a three-game sweep of the Marlins. Jason Jennings (10-12)
suffered the defeat and is now 1-6 in his last eight outings. The
righthander was tagged for eight runs on 12 hits and three walks
in six innings. In today's pitching matchup, Mike Hampton take the
mound for Atlanta to face Chin-Hui Tsao of the Rockies. Hampton
has won eight consecutive decisions and posted a 1.08 ERA over his
past three starts. This will be his return trip to Coors Field,
the stadium blamed for his struggles during the second half of the
2001 season and all of last year. The southpaw, who was traded to
the Braves last November, limited the Rockies to three hits over
seven scoreless innings at Turner Field on May 6th. Tsao is coming
off his worst start since making his Major League debut back on
June 25, giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings
of work against the Mets last week. However, Tsao has yet to lose
at Coors Field this year, with a 2.91 ERA and 10 strikeouts in two
games. Hampton is one of the hottest pitchers in baseball at the
moment and is laying a reasonable price. Braves are the choice here.
OAK B ZITO -L (10-10, 3.22 ERA) vs TOR R HALLADAY -R (16-5, 3.53
ERA)>WIN
The A's head to Toronto for a weekend series with the Blue Jays.
In Oakland's game on Thursday, Manny Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a
homer, three runs batted in and three runs scored, as the Red Sox
rolled to a 14-5 victory over the Athletics as -130 favorites. Mark
Ellis was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored for Oakland,
which had a four-game winning streak stopped. Eric Chavez knocked
in two runs in defeat. The Athletics didn't lose any ground on AL
West-leading Seattle, as the Mariners also lost Thursday in Toronto
and own a three-game lead over Oakland. Oakland starter Rich Harden
(3-3) lost his third straight start and had his worst outing since
being recalled in late July. The rookie righthander was tagged for
eight runs on four hits and seven walks in just 2 2/3 innings. He
has been roughed up for 14 runs over 6 2/3 innings of his last two
starts. In Toronto's game on Thursday, Bobby Kielty knocked in a
pair of runs and Mark Hendrickson threw seven-plus solid innings,
as Toronto defeated Seattle, 7-3 as +150 home underdogs. Kielty
had three hits, while Carlos Delgado and Eric Hinske each scored
twice for the Blue Jays, who won their second straight game following
a three-game losing streak. Hendrickson (8-9) brought a shutout
into the eighth inning before Dan Wilson connected for a two-run
homer. The towering lefthander gave up just four hits and the two
runs to beat Seattle for the second time in 10 days. In tonight's
pitching matchup, Barry Zito takes the mound for the A's to face
Roy Halladay of the Blue Jays. After a rough mid-summer slump, Zito
has won his last two starts to get back to .500. In his last outing,
the lefty pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and three runs
and striking out six. Halladay leads the AL in wins and innings
pitched (201 2/3), and he's second in winning percentage (.762).
Despite those facts, he's 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA in August, owing largely
to his last start. In that outing, he lasted just three innings,
allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. That last start just happened
to be against the A's and Barry Zito, so will side with Halladay
in the quick revenge matchup at a reasonable price at home.
